Akshi Tarpana (also spelled Netra Tarpana) is a classical Ayurvedic eye therapy that involves bathing the eyes in medicated ghee (clarified butter) or oil to nourish, strengthen, and rejuvenate eye tissues. It is a deeply soothing and restorative treatment, especially beneficial for those suffering from eye strain, dryness, or vision problems.
"Akshi" = Eyes
"Tarpana" = Nourishment or rejuvenation
So, Akshi Tarpana literally means "nourishing the eyes."
Preparation
The patient lies comfortably on their back with eyes closed.
A dough ring made from black gram flour (or wheat flour) is formed around both eyes to create a leak-proof well.
Main Procedure
Medicated ghee (like Triphala Ghrita or Jeevantyadi Ghrita), warmed to body temperature, is slowly poured into the eye well.
The patient is instructed to open and close the eyes gently, keeping the ghee in contact with the eye tissues for 10β30 minutes (based on the condition and tolerance).
After the therapy, the ghee is carefully removed, and the area is cleaned.
Post-care
Eyes should be protected from sunlight, dust, screens, and bright lights for a few hours.
Patients are advised to rest the eyes and avoid reading or screen exposure immediately after.
