Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment that focuses on the lower back and spine, particularly the lumbar region, to relieve pain, stiffness, and inflammation. It is a specialized therapy often used to address conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, muscle spasms, and sacroiliac joint pain. Kati Basti involves the application of medicated oils or ghee on the lower back, which helps to soothe and heal the tissues, muscles, and nerves in the area.
Kati refers to the lower back or lumbar region, and Basti refers to treatment with oil or medicated ghee.
The therapy involves placing a dough ring around the lower back to form a reservoir, into which warm medicated oil or ghee is poured. The oil is kept in place for a specific duration to help nourish, lubricate, and reduce pain and inflammation in the back.
1. Purva Karma (Preparation)
Snehana (oil massage): The patient may first undergo a full-body oil massage or local oil application on the lower back to help relax the muscles and prepare the area for the therapy.
Swedana (sudation or sweating): A mild heat therapy, such as a steam bath or hot compress, may be used on the back to open the pores and promote circulation in the lumbar region.
2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
A dough ring (usually made from black gram flour or wheat flour) is placed on the lower back around the affected area to create a boundary.
Warm medicated oil or ghee is poured into the dough ring and allowed to soak into the back for approximately 30β45 minutes.
The oil is gently massaged into the skin, allowing it to be absorbed and deeply nourish the tissues of the lower back, relieving pain, tension, and inflammation.
3. Paschat Karma (Post-care)
After the oil is removed, the lower back is gently wiped, and the patient is allowed to rest for a while.
A cooling herbal tea or mild drink may be recommended to aid in relaxation.
Gentle stretching or movement may be encouraged to improve the flexibility of the lower back.
