Greeva Basti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy designed to treat neck pain, stiffness, and conditions affecting the cervical spine. It involves the application of medicated warm oil over the neck area, typically for 30β45 minutes, to soothe and heal the muscles, nerves, and tissues in the cervical region. This therapy is a form of local Basti, where oil is retained on the skin in a specific area for therapeutic purposes.
Greeva means neck or cervical region, and Basti refers to treatment with oil.
Greeva Basti is specifically aimed at treating ailments of the neck, shoulders, and upper back by providing nourishment, lubrication, and pain relief.
This therapy is especially beneficial for those suffering from muscle stiffness, arthritis, degenerative spinal conditions, and nerve compression in the neck and shoulder area.
Purva Karma (Preparation)
The patient is first given a gentle massage (Abhyanga) using warm herbal oils, which helps to relax the muscles and prepare the area for the oil therapy.
Swedana (sweating therapy), such as steam therapy or hot compresses, may also be used to warm up the neck area and open the pores.
Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
A dough ring (often made from black gram flour or wheat flour) is applied around the neck area to form a reservoir to hold the medicated oil.
Warm herbal oil (such as Mahanarayana oil, Dashamoola oil, or Sesame oil) is poured into the dough ring and allowed to soak into the skin and tissues of the neck.
The patient may lie in a comfortable position, with the oil left in place for about 30β45 minutes while it deeply nourishes and relieves pain and tension in the neck and cervical spine.
The oil may be gently massaged into the neck, allowing it to be absorbed for therapeutic benefits.
Paschat Karma (Post-care)
After the therapy, the neck is gently wiped off, and the patient is given time to relax.
A mild herbal drink or cooling herbal tea may be recommended to further aid relaxation and digestion.
Light stretching exercises or movements may be suggested to ease any residual stiffness and enhance mobility.
