Vamana Karma is one of the five main detoxification therapies in Ayurveda, collectively known as Panchakarma. It refers to therapeutic emesis, or medically induced vomiting, to expel toxins and excess doshas—primarily Kapha dosha—from the body.
🔍 Purpose of Vamana Karma
Vamana is used to:
Remove excess mucus from the respiratory and digestive tract.
Cleanse the stomach and upper GI tract.
Address Kapha-related disorders such as:
Asthma and chronic bronchitis
Cough, sinus congestion
Obesity
Skin disorders (like psoriasis)
Diabetes (in Kapha-dominant types)
Allergies
🌀 How Vamana Is Done (Simplified Process)
Purva Karma (Pre-treatment Preparation)
Internal oleation (Snehapana): Drinking medicated ghee for 3–7 days to loosen toxins.
External oleation & steam therapy: Oil massage and steam to further liquefy toxins.
Kapha-increasing diet: Heavy, oily, and dairy-rich foods the night before emesis to prepare the system.
Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
Early in the morning, under supervision, the person is given a vomit-inducing herbal decoction (commonly Madana Phala, Licorice, or Salt water).
The individual drinks the decoction and warm water repeatedly until vomiting occurs.
This process continues until bile appears in the vomit or the practitioner deems the body has been sufficiently cleansed.
Paschat Karma (Post-treatment Care)
Rest and a strict post-detox diet (starting with thin rice gruel, moving to normal food over 3–7 days).
Avoid exertion, sun, and strong emotions.
✅ Benefits of Vamana Karma

⚠️ Important Considerations
Vamana should only be performed under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.
