Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating Ayurvedic therapy in which warm, medicated oil or herbal decoction is gently and continuously poured over the forehead, specifically targeting the third eye area (Ajna Chakra). It is a form of external oleation (Snehana) and is often used to calm the mind, nervous system, and senses.
Shiro = head
Dhara = continuous stream
So, Shirodhara literally means “continuous flow on the head.”
Shirodhara is primarily used to treat Vata and Pitta imbalances related to the nervous system, emotions, and hormones. It has a profound calming effect on the brain and mind.
Taila Dhara – Medicated oil (most common type)
Takra Dhara – Buttermilk (cooling, for Pitta disorders like psoriasis, insomnia)
Ksheera Dhara – Milk (used for soothing Pitta and nourishing)
Jala Dhara – Herbal decoction (for heat and inflammation)
Ghrita Dhara – Clarified butter (ghee) (for deep rejuvenation)
Preparation
Light massage (Abhyanga) of the head, neck, and shoulders.
Warm oil is prepared, usually infused with herbs like Brahmi, Ashwagandha, or Bala.
Main Procedure
The patient lies on a Shirodhara table with the head slightly tilted back.
A stream of warm oil is poured in a continuous rhythm from a hanging vessel (dhara pot) onto the forehead (between the eyebrows).
