Vasti Karma (also spelled Basti Karma) is one of the most important therapies in Panchakarma, the Ayurvedic detoxification system. It refers to the therapeutic administration of medicated enemas through the rectum, and is considered the most effective treatment for balancing Vata dosha (the energy of movement and communication in the body).
Vasti is mainly used to:
Eliminate accumulated Vata toxins from the colon (the main seat of Vata).
Nourish and rejuvenate the lower digestive tract.
Address Vata-related disorders, such as:
Arthritis and joint pain
Sciatica, lower back pain
Constipation, bloating
Anxiety, insomnia
Neurological conditions
Menstrual disorders
Infertility (due to Vata imbalance)
There are two main categories:
Niruha Vasti (Asthapana Vasti) – Decoction-based Enema
Made from a herbal decoction, honey, salt, oil, and a paste of medicinal herbs.
Primarily cleansing in nature.
Typically used during the daytime.
Especially useful in chronic conditions and acute Vata imbalances.
Anuvasana Vasti – Oil-based Enema
Uses medicated oils like Dashamoola Taila or Bala Taila.
Nourishes and lubricates the colon.
Can be done more frequently and is often gentler.
Helps strengthen the body and promote tissue regeneration (dhatu poshana).
Purva Karma (Pre-procedure)
Snehana (internal and external oleation with oils or ghee).
Swedana (sudation or sweating therapy) to loosen toxins and open body channels.
Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
A warm, medicated enema is administered through a specially designed tube (Vasti yantra).
The patient lies on the left side, and the enema is gently introduced into the rectum.
Depending on the type, the medicine is retained for a short (cleansing Vasti) or longer (oil Vasti) period.
Paschat Karma (Post-care)
Light, digestible diet (manda, peya) for a few days.
Rest and gentle activities to allow the body to assimilate the treatment.
Avoid cold, exertion, and emotional stress.
Most powerful treatment for Vata-related diseases.
Lubricates joints and muscles.
Strengthens digestion and immunity.
Calms the nervous system and mind.
Improves reproductive health and fertility.
Not suitable for:
Very young or very old patients (unless modified)
Acute diarrhea or bleeding disorders
Recent rectal surgery or injuries
Pregnancy (especially late-term)
Vasti is often called “half of Ayurveda treatment” due to its vast therapeutic applications and effectiveness. It can be part of a deeper Panchakarma plan or used as a stand-alone therapy for chronic conditions.
